*I am downloading large files from a website and it is going slowly or not working.  Is the bandwidth management system blocking me?

Most likely not.  The bandwidth management system that is in place does not block any traffic other than ICMP - which is ping/traceroute and is the most common type of virus traffic.  What the bandwidth management system does is prioritize certain types of traffic, mostly Web/HTTP and email.  If you are downloading the files from a web server, and the download is going slowly or not working, the problem is most likely with the web server, or there are simply many other people vying for the available bandwidth.

*Why does the speed of the Internet connection vary?

File sharing makes up the majority of the usage of the GrandMarc bandwidth, and speeds vary depending on the number of people engaging in file-sharing activities at any particular time.  However, we have recently installed a device that gives 'academic' traffic, such as web and email, much higher priority than other types of traffic such as file-sharing and gaming.  Another factor that makes a large impact on network performance is virus traffic.  Click here for virus and virus protection info.

*How do I find out if I have a network interface card or if it is working?

Look in your device manager.

*I have a laptop/notebook, which works on the network at school or elsewhere, but not in my apartment. What is wrong?

The IP Address given your computer at the last location is probably still in its memory and you will need to release and renew the IP address. See Laptop/Notebook issues or IP Configuration.
